It is unlikely that school leavers would have the necessary work and life experience to succeed in the Certificate IV, unless they have direct involvement with a family business.
Course Structure
To gain the Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management)
you are required to complete 10 units of competency.
Each unit is available as an independent study unit. Therefore you
can enrol for one or more units to meet your immediate business needs.
However, you should seek counselling from a small business lecturer
to ensure you have the prerequisite knowledge and skills required.
Course Materials
Units are supported by comprehensive self-contained learning materials.
The fee quoted for each unit includes all essential learning materials.
Study Options
You can choose between two flexible study options:
Classes - available for the core units and some of the
more popular elective units. Classes for other elective units are scheduled
on demand. Classes are conducted by experienced business mentors and
are repeated throughout the year. Refer to the class timetable for further
details.
External Study - available for ALL units. Enrol at any
time and then study at home or at work using easy to follow, comprehensive
learning materials. An experienced business mentor will support you
through a telephone or drop in tutorial service. This is an ideal option
for those who live too far away, or who cannot commit to scheduled classes.
Study Load
All small business management units are self-paced. You can work at
your own pace and submit the assignments when you feel ready. However,
it is important to set yourself some clear study goals.
Each unit is allocated a 'Nominal Duration' period - that is, the number
of study hours the average person would take to complete the performance
criteria. This can vary greatly between students and depends on your
motivation, your study skills, and your experience in the topic. It
is useful to help you calculate study loads.
For example, if you can only devote five hours a week to study, it
will take you eight weeks to complete a 40-hour unit. This could be
a combination of class time and home study, or you could choose to study
only at home.
When choosing the units you wish to study this year, draw up a realistic
study plan. You will be expected to complete any units in which you
enrol this year by December. If studying externally, your tutor
will help you set due dates for assignments and work with you to keep
you on track.
Access to Lecturers
You may contact lecturing staff by email sbtc@tafesa.edu.au OR by leaving
a message at the Administration office of the Small Business Training
Centre.
Assessment
We believe that learning should take place within the context of running
a small business. Therefore, assessments require students to apply their
knowledge and skills to their own business or business idea, or in a
simulated business environment using a case study. In this way, the
training is directly relevant to your situation and you should see immediate
benefit from your studies.
Assessment will take the form of written assignments. There are no
exams.
TAFE SA takes into account any special needs of students so special consideration
can be negotiated.
Mutual Recognition
You may apply for exemption from part or the entire course as a result
of prior studies completed at school, TAFE, university, private colleges
or other educational institutions where a formal arrange-ment exists.
Documentary evidence must accompany the application, which can be obtained
from the Small Business Training Centre.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Not everyone enrolling in a TAFE course is a real beginner. If you
already have competence in an area of small business management, you
can ask to have those skills recognised. This is done through a formal
assessment of your prior formal or informal study, work experience,
training and life experience.
Documentary evidence must be provided. An application form can be obtained
from the Small Business Training Centre. A fee applies for this service.
Study Pathways
Students who complete the Certificate IV in Business (Small Business
Management) may progress into the Diploma of Business (Small Business
Management) with 420 - 460 hours credit.
Students who successfully complete the Diploma of Small Business Management
will receive credit for 6 courses within the Division of Business and
Enterprise undergraduate program at the University of South Australia.
Fees
Fees vary according to nominal duration of each subject. Concessions
are available to holders of a health care card or pension card. A copy
of the concession card is required upon enrolment.
Maximum tuition fee payable annually will be $1900 for courses not
deemed fee-for-service. Additional costs include stationery and recommended
textbooks.
If you are in business, the fees may be tax deductible for yourself
and for your employees.
Applications for the payment of fees-by-instalments are available to
students from the Small Business Training Centre.
Refund Policy
Refund of fees is available under certain circumstances. Check with
the enrolment Officer at the Small Business Training Centre for further
information.
