Why study Small Business Management?

Running your own business can be a most rewarding experience. It gives you the freedom to pursue your own goals, make your own decisions and hopefully make a lot of money!

Yet the facts show that 10% of new small business ventures close within one year. 24% close after three years. Success in small business is directly related to the level of management skills of the owner/manager.

There are approximately 900,000 small businesses in Australia, excluding farm businesses. Two-thirds of small businesses are family-owned. 76% of them are operated from home or at home. 83.5% employ less than 5 employees and approximately 45% have no employees at all.

You can see that the level of management skills required to be successful varies greatly between different small businesses. This nationally accredited award is designed to provide an integrated sequence of management training appropriate to the size and complexity of individual small businesses.

The Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management) course is ideally suited to:

  • Existing owner/managers of small to medium enterprises
  • Senior employees in small to medium enterprises
  • Intending small business owner/managers
  • Advisers to small business

The philosophy of this course is that the learning should take place within the context of your own business or business idea. Therefore, assessments require students to apply their knowledge and skills to their own business or proposed business. In this way, the training is directly relevant to your situation and you should see immediate benefit from your studies.
